Dog Park Description

Officially opening in September 2010
In December 2009, the Amherst Town Board unanimously approved Amherst, New York’s first Off Leash Recreation Area (OLRA) for dogs and their owners. The Amherst Paw Park Association (APPA) – through its affiliation with the Amherst Parks Foundation – is dedicated to raising the funds necessary to make the park a reality.

Thanks to the Town, we have approval to convert an unused portion of Amherst’s Municipal Complex on Smith Road (near the Compost Facility) into what is a growing phenomenon in the United States. Dog parks are designed to give dogs the exercise they need — off leash — in a controlled setting. The parks are particularly appealing to senior citizens and the disabled who otherwise do not have a place to exercise their beloved pets.

Our vision for the Amherst Paw Park includes a fenced-in, dedicated area that allows dogs to run and socialize while not infringing on the activities of joggers, cyclists, and other park users. The park will encourage interaction between dog owners and provide a setting to meet others with similar interests.

Went yesterday for the first time with my 5 mnh old german shepard puppy. Had a great time. Met a lot of nice people and realy nice dogs. Loved the park… then a husk male came in and was soo agresive we had to leave. That dog attacked alit of the dogs in the park…we left when he came after my dog…ill go again, but ill keep an eye out for that particular dog…the owner did not control his dog!

My Dog Sparkey ( West Highland Terrier ) he loves it. My husband brings him there just about everyday. He cleans up after him. Many don’t. This is a must. If you have clean up after other pets many won’t go there anymore. If you have a young pup they can go in with the small dogs. There are two sections one for big dogs and one for small dogs. Take your fur babies there they will love it. Come and enjoy. I am sure your pet will love it.

Went to the park today with my 1 year old lab mix Misty. She loved it. She ran and interacted with all the dogs very well. The other owners were also very friendly. I had quite a few conversations. All the dogs seemed to really enjoy it and interacted with each other and the other owners very well. There was on dog who seemed to get nervous and growled at the other dogs but it’s owner immediately defused the situation and removed her dog. We spent about an hour and a half there and when we got home my pup slept for hours. Now when I ask if she wants to go to the puppy park she jumps up and gets very excited. This park was a great idea and we will be visiting it on a regular basis. I live in a condo so she doesn’t get a chance to really run
Thank you to the organizers of this park.
